Historical:

Clara Gilbert (1902-1995) was the eldest daughter of restraint owner Charles Dell Gilbert and his wife Katherine.  After graduating from Elmira Free Academy in 1921,  she worked briefly at Flannagan's store, then the Chamber of Commerce Employment Bureau. In 1924, she became the head of the women's division of the New York State Employment Office in Elmira. She left in 1928 after marrying Lawrence H. Baker.

Herman R. Susemihl joined Company L of the 3rd New York Volunteer Infantry in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.  After his honorable discharge, he worked as a clerk at Gosper-Kelly Shoe Store.  During World War II, he volunteered as plane spotter for the Civil Air Defense.  He died in 1964. 

Scope:The Gilbert-Susemihl Collection contains Clara Gilbert's diaries, 1916-1926; Thomas Wilson's diary, 1870; and Herman R. Susemihl's personal papers and photographs, 1893-1960.
