Welcome to the Booth Library manuscript index.

Historical:

Mary Stewart Pollock - Mary Stewart Pollock was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on February 1, 1922, but came to Elmira in 1940 when her step-father became a manager at the Elmira Coca-Cola bottling plant.  She attended Gunston Hall Junior College and got a nursing degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.  During WWII, she worked for as a secretary for the Automotive Division of the War Production Board and then Bendix-Eclipse before opening a nursery school with her sister in Elmira.  In 1951, she applied for the Foreign Service as a secretary and served in Tokyo, Japan (1952-54), Paris, France (1954-57) (1969-73), Reykjavik, Iceland (1959-61), Cairo, Egypt (1961-68), Kinshasa, Zaire (1973-76), Brussels, Belgium (1976-78) and Washington, D.C. (1978-81).  She retired in 1981 and returned to Elmira.  She died April 9, 2001 and is buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery. 

Scope:The Mary Stewart Pollock Papers includes Ms. Pollock's letters home from her various Foreign Service postings, 1952-1981.
