Welcome to the Booth Library manuscript index.

Provenance:The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by Kathy Charlenow in 1999.

Historical:1005 Walnut Street-In 1907, Dr. Samuel M. Seafuse, an ear, eye and throat specialist, opened the Seafuse Private Hospital at 1005 Walnut Street in Elmira, NY.  In 1918, he sold the property, and from 1918 to 1919 Mrs. Eva Paradise ran the Paradise Private Hospital at that location.  From 1920 to 1922, 1005 Walnut was the Merritt Private Hospital run by Mrs. Mae Merritt.  In 1923, Dr. Seafuse reacquired the Walnut Street property and ran it as a private medical practice from 1923 until 1931. 
Scope:

The Seafuse/Merritt Private Hospital Collection consists of medical charts for 158 patients of the Seafuse and Merritt Private Hospitals.  The charts range in date from 1907 to 1931 with the bulk of the collection falling between 1913 and 1922.  All charts are arranged alphabetically by hospital.

Researchers use service copy, originals stored separately.

This collection contains medical charts from several of the private hospitals once located at 1005 Walnut Street including the Seafuse Private Hospital and the Merritt Private Hospital.
