Welcome to the Booth Library manuscript index. 

The manuscript index contains links to finding aids for the collections of the Booth Library.  Each finding aid has a description of that collection along with a listing of the items within that collection.  The Booth Library staff and volunteers are updating the index daily in order to make your research experience more productive.

Historical:

The Hillman family has resided in Chemung County, NY since the early 1800's.  Individual Hillmans prominently featured in this collection include Dr. Augustus Hillman and Idalene Hillman Jenkins.

Dr. Augustus Hillman - Augustus Hillman was born on April 14, 1903 and grew up on his family's farm in Wellsburg, NY.  He graduated from Elmira Free Academy in 1920 and went on to graduate from Hobart College in 1925.  During his college years, he ran cross-country, breaking course records at several colleges and winning the 1923 Niagara District AAU championship. In 1929, he graduated from the University of Rochester Medical College and, in 1931, he opened his medical practice in Elmira where he worked until his retirement in 1976.  Dr. Hillman was inducted into the Elmira Sports Hall of Fame in 1983 and into the Hobart Hall of Fame in 1986.  He died, at age 89, on February 1, 1993. 

Idalene Hillman Jenkins- Idalene Jenkins, nee Hillman, was the wife of Tom Jenkins, a local WWI veteran.  Mrs. Jenkins taught third grade in the Elmira City School District #8 beginning in 1913 until 1927, when she began teaching second grade at George M. Diven Elementary School.  In 1941, she remarried, changing her name to Shaner.  She retired from teaching in 1961.

Scope:The James Hillman Collection includes photographs, newspaper clippings and assorted manuscripts, all relating to the Hillman family.  The photographs, which form the bulk of the collection, range in date from approximately 1905 to the 1940's.  The newspaper clippings date predominantly from the 1980's and focus on Dr. Augustus Hillman's running career.
