Historical:Early Regional Commerce - The earliest trading post in Chemung County appeared in 1784 and was a place for farmers and hunters to sell their products in exchange for processed goods.  One of the earliest traders in the Twin Tiers was Matthias Hollenback (1752-1829) of Wilkes-Barre.  Along with his partners, Stephen Tuttle (1772-1851) and Thomas M. Perry (1777-1836), he established a series of stores and trading posts at Tioga Point, Lackawanna and Wysok in Pennsylvania and Newtown (now Elmira) in New York. Other prominent early traders included the brothers Robert and Lyman Covell, Benjamin Perry, Archibald Campbell, John Arnot and Guy Maxwell. 
Scope:The Early Regional Commerce Collection includes ledgers, letters, invoices, receipts and assorted records concerning business transactions in the Twin Tiers from 1783 to 1835.
