Historical:Elmira Reformatory - The idea for the Elmira Reformatory was conceived by Zebulon Brockway and put into law in 1870.  The first prisoners arrived in the summer of 1876.  The idea was that, through religious instruction, vocational training and general education, younger criminals could be molded into responsible citizens.  Daniel E. Damon Jr. served as the Superintendent during the 1960s and 1970s.  Damon was also director of the Chemung County Historical Society during the 1970s.
Scope:The Daniel Damon/ Elmira Reformatory Collection includes Daniel Damon's notes on the history of various "Elmiras" across the United States and Canada; administrative documents relating to the Reformatory, 1960s-1970s; and photographs of the Reformatory, 1880s-1970s.
