Historical:

Jerome's-In 1910, Max and Ella Jerome founded the Empire Credit Clothing Co. at 314 East Water Street in Elmira, NY.  There they sold men's, women's and children's apparel, hats and rugs.  They changed the name of the store to Jerome and Fichler in 1925, but reverted back to their original name in 1929.  In 1944, they changed the name once again, this time to Jeromes Empire Clothing Co.  In 1945, Max Jerome retired from the business leaving his sons Arnold and Robert as president and secretary-treasurer of the store respectively.  In 1946, the brothers moved the store to 308-310 East Water Street and changed the name to Jerome's.  In 1950, the brothers opened a second location specializing in women's and children's clothing at 201 Hoffman Street.  They expanded again in 1952 when they opened a branch store in Elmira Heights at 211 East 14th Street.   Sometime in 1966, they closed the Hoffman Street and Elmira Heights branches, but expanded from just 308-310 East Water Street into 306 as well.  In 1967, Jerome's moved from their Water Street location to 350-352 North Main Street.  Jerome's went out of business in 1979. 

Robert Jerome- Robert Jerome was born in 1920 to Max and Ella Jerome of Elmira, NY.  He graduated from Elmira Free Academy in 1937 and from Cornell University in 1941.  He served as an American liaison with the French Amy during WWII.  In 1945, he became the secretary-treasurer of Jerome's, the family business.  He retired in 1979 and died in 2000.

Helen Horwitz Jerome-In 1937, Helen Horwitz graduated from Southside High in Elmira, NY and in 1941, she graduated from Mary Washington College. She married Robert Jerome in 1942.  They had two sons, Edward and Michael, and one daughter, Elaine.   

Scope:The Robert and Helen Jerome Collection contains yearbooks, photograph albums, newspaper clippings, brochures and manuscripts pertaining to the Jerome family and the Jerome family store.  The bulk of the collection consists of newspaper clippings and brochures concerning Jerome's clothing store, dating primarily from the 1950's and 1960's.  Other highlights in the collection include photograph albums with images of Elmira landmarks and items relating to Robert and Helen's high school graduating classes.
