Historical:Sheely Family - Frederick Sheely, a German emigrant, came to the Chemung Valley in 1833, and worked in a tannery.  In 1874, he started his own tannery on the south side of the Chemung River near the Walnut Street Bridge.  His wife's name was Maria and their sons included Henry, Edward and John.  Edward and John owned E. & J. Sheely, wholesale dealers in hides, leather, shoe findings, and saddlery hardware, located at 243-249 West Water Street. Henry B. Sheely was a farmer who owned acreage on the south side of the Chemung River, from Lafayette Street to Bulkhead.  He died on May 23, 1943, leaving his estate to be divided among numerous nieces and nephews.  The executor of his estate was Fred E. Scharf, the husband of his niece, Mildred.
Scope:

The Henry B. Sheely Estate Papers include numerous legal documents such as wills, deeds, abstracts of titles and court records; correspondence of the executor of the estate, Fred E. Scharf; receipts and the personal correspondence of Olive M. Sheely, the niece of Henry B. Sheely.
