Provenance:The items in this collection were given to the Booth Library by various donors. 
Terms:Drinking water; Electric utilities; Elmira (N.Y.); Gas companies; Municipal water supply; Public utilities.
Historical:Utilities - Elmira Gas Light Company, Elmira's first utility, was founded in 1852 by the Arnot family.  Other early utilities include the Elmira Water Works, New York & New Jersey Globe Gas Light Co. and the New England Power Company.  Electricity was first available in the City of Elmira in 1878 from the Elmira Water, Light and Railroad Company.  In 1910 the company was acquired by Associated Gas & Electric.  Over the years the company has gone through several name changes but is now New York State Electric and Gas Corporation a.k.a NYSEG.
Scope:

The Utilities Collection includes bills, booklets, notices, company newsletters and other assorted documents associated with Chemung County utilities from 1852 to the present.
