Twain traveled widely and saw much, and all that he saw was grist for his literary mill.  He had an opinion about everything and a knack for expressing those opinions in such a pithy and memorable way that he became one of the most popular lecturers on both sides of the Atlantic.  His humor ranges from the light-hearted to the bitterly ironic.  The quotations in this book, taken from his novels, stories, essays, travel writings, letters and speeches, capture the essence of Twain's thought and style and are a source of wisdom and delight for anyone who reads them.

Steeples on the Landscape: The Architecture of the Houses of Worship in Chemung CountyAdd to Cart
Our Price: $4.00

Throughout New York State, religious congregations are the stewards of some of our most important architecture, churches and synagogues. These congregations face many challenges, not the least of which is the continuing upkeep of their buildings and grounds.  A step vital to the long term care of historic religious buildings is their identification and documentation. The Chemung County Historical Society has begun this important process with this book. Exploring both the city of Elmira as well as the many area villages and hamlets, the county's varied religious heritage is presented here - tracing the social, economic, and ethnic trends and traditions which have influenced its ecclesiastical architecture.

Text by Timothy L. Decker with an introduction by Tania Werbizky, Preservation Planner. Published by the Chemung County Historical Society. 1988. 28 pages.

A Link in the Great Chain: A History of the Chemung CanalAdd to Cart
Our Price: $12.50

Written by Gary Emerson. Published by the Chemung County Historical Society. 2004

From 1833 to 1878, The Chemung Canal served as one of the lateral canals in New York State providing access to the Erie Canal through the Cayuga and Seneca Canal.  The Chemung Canal connected the Chemung River in Elmira, New York to Seneca Lake at Watkins Glen, New York.  A navigable feeder supplied water to the canal from the Chemung River near Corning, New York.  Although the canal had a short life, it did a great deal to change the landscape and the economy of the local area as part of the great chain of canals that once criss-crossed New York State.

At the county fair carnival, the freewheeling, transient carnival workers ("carnies") meet the permanent local population ("towners").  While the towners win prizes for cattle and quilts, the carnies provide fun and excitement from a more exotic and cosmopolitan lifestyle.  For the towners, the fair and carnival are a special once a year recreation; for the carnies they are all in a day's work.  Moving from one town to another during the fair season, the carnies are a town unto themselves, speaking their own language and living as close neighbors in the RV's, trucks and railroad cars of the travelling show.

New York’s County Fairs: A History and Architectural SurveyAdd to Cart

Cotton Candy, stuffed animals, and Ferris wheels are popular symbols of the American county fair.  The buildings at the fairgrounds do not show up as often in memories; in fact, most vistors to county fairs probably never notice the structures where cattle are judged and crafts are shown.  Yet the architecture of county fairground buildings can be a powerful reminder of a fair's history, and this is especially true in New York State.

So Far From DixieAdd to Cart
Our Price: $25.00

By Philip Burnham

Is the gripping tale of five men who were sent to New York's infamous POW camp, Elmira, and survived to document their stories.  Berry Benson promised that he would escape the prison under honorable circumstances.  Anthony Keiley charmed Union authorities into giving him a job at Elmira and later became mayor of Richmond Virginia. John King refused to build coffins for his fellow prisoners.  Marcus Toney refused to take the Union oath of loyalty until long after the war had ended.  And Frank Wilkeson a Union army volunteer only sixteen years old, endured the same humiliation punishment meted out to hte prisoners he was guarding.

What follows is the story of Elmira-a kind of "Andersonville on ice:"-as told by the men who left it while they still drew breath.

The Business of Captivity: Elmira and Its Civil War PrisonAdd to Cart
Our Price: $35.00

By Michael P Gray

In the early stages of the Civil War, Elmira was designated as a rendezvous for training Union Soliders.  The local economy boombed from supplying troops.  Then, in 1864, Union leadersdecided that Elmira would be converted into a prison.  During its single year of existence, more money was expended on the Elmira prison than on any of the other Union stockades.  Even with this record spending, a more ignominious figure was attached to Elmira: of the more than 12,000 Confederates imprisoned there, nearly 3,000 died while in captivity-the highest rate of any Northern prison.  The aughor's conclusions are based on new. little-known, or never used archival material.  The economic and social impact of the prison on the host community offers new insights into the social history of the war.  In a similar vein, the author's description of the prison culture is especially illumination.
