The Disabled Lion of Union: Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and Civil War Disability, Sarah Handley-Cousins, Ph.D.
Sarah Handley-Cousins will focus on Civil War veteran Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Chamberlain was one of the Civil War’s most recognized figures, a military hero who went on to serve as governor of Maine. Disabled by a gunshot during the war, Chamberlain experienced significant pain, ill health, and limited mobility for the remainder of his life. Yet he hid his wound, effectively keeping it a secret. Using Chamberlain’s experience as a disabled veteran, Handley-Cousins will talk about how Civil War veterans grappled with disability.
