Beyond Glory: How pay disparities disrupted households of color, John Riley, Ph.D.
John Riley will look at the men of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, discussing how their Civil War pay strike affected families back home. Pay disparities between black and white soldiers was a gross injustice, and these soldiers refused to accept any pay as a principled stand for equality. Consequences of that strike were heavily borne by the wives and children of those soldiers, many of whom did not qualify for state or local relief due to their race.
