"To Follow with Eye and Pencil”: Experiencing the Civil War at Home

What was it like to experience the Civil War from places like Chemung County, far from the frontlines of battle? This presentation looks at the use of popular Telegram Marking Maps, which allowed owners to create their own interactive maps of war at home, to describe how the era created a newly invigorated democratic engagement between the individual and the nation.
