Looking Over the Deadline: The Rise of Elmira Prison as a Dark Tourist Destination in the Chemung Valley

During the Civil War, prisoner-of-war camps became a central stop in the burgeoning field of “dark tourism.” This presentation will focus on the role of prisoners, civilians, area businessmen, and the US military, within the prison camp tourism trade here in Elmira and elsewhere throughout the North.
