April 22:

Poor Helpless Soldiers at their Mercy: Survivors of Elmira and their Memories of Captivity
Dr. Angela Riotto, Historian with the Army University Press
During the American Civil War, 410,000 soldiers were held prisoner. In pursuit of remembrance and recognition, both Union and Confederate ex-prisoners penned memoirs, published prison diaries, addressed conventions, and sponsored monuments and wanted to be remembered for their suffering. This presentation will discuss some Elmira survivors’ narratives and shed light on how and why these former prisoners’ shared their memories of captivity.

Click here to watch between 7:30pm and 8:30pm on April 22.
