Elmira HistoryForge Transcription Session
Online Volunteer Opportunity

Help build the Elmira HistoryForge database!  Join us virtually and preserve history from the comfort of your own home.


Elmira HistoryForge is hosting a Virtual Transcription Session on Saturday, June 26 from 10am to 12pm. This transcription session is open to new volunteers and our established volunteers. 


Please contact the Project Coordinator at by the Wednesday prior to the meeting to sign up.


New volunteers please complete the Volunteer Application here:  to learn more and join us. To help with our behind the scenes processing of volunteer materials, please complete the volunteer form at least 4 days before the session.

YOU WILL NEED: A laptop or desktop computer, stable internet connection


HistoryForge is a digital mapping and transcription project that has partnered with the Chemung County Historical Society to create Elmira HistoryForge. We at Elmira HistoryForge are excited to be expanding this database to our own community. We need help digitizing information from the 1910 Elmira census to add to our database! Volunteers will read through the handwritten census notes from 1910 and place these people from the past into a map of their neighborhood, just as it was at the turn of the century. 


Elmira HistoryForge is a digital history project which combines historic maps and photos with census records of the people who lived in Elmira, creating a way to visualize the history of Elmira in the early 1900s. Check out our project here:
