Historical:

Sam Casil (February 28, 1919-December 12, 2012), son of Paul and Pauline Casil, was born and raised in Elmira. He served in the army in World War II, after which he went to work as a car repairman for the Pennsylvania Railroad at the Southport train yards. He was eventually transferred to the train yards in Bath, New York, after the Pennsylvania Railroad was bought out by first Penn Central in 1968 and then Conrail in 1976. He retired from Conrail in 1984 after having worked in the railroad industry for 32 years. He and his wife, Harriet Passwaiter, were married on May 10, 1947. They had two children.

Scope:

The Sam Casil Railroad Collection contains papers related to Sam Casil’s employment with Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, and Conrail; and newspaper clippings about railroads in the Twin Tiers.
