Welcome to the Booth Library manuscript index.

Provenance:The items in this collection were given to the Booth Library by multiple donors.
Historical:

Harry E. Butters (1895-1969) served as a member of Company L during the Mexican Border War and World War I. He worked for American LaFrance from 1917 to 1960 as an artist for the advertising department retired as the department head. He and his wife, Josephine, resided at 97 Westmont Avenue in Elmira with their two daughters.

 

Sherman Moreland (1868-1951) was born in Van Etten. He studied law at Cornell University and practiced law in Van Etten. He served as Chemung County's representative in the New York State Assembly from 1903 to 1907 and sponsored the Moreland Act,  which allows the governor to investigate any public department within the state. In 1909, Moreland was appointed to the Supreme Court of the Philippines where he served until 1917. He was a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corpse of the United States Army from 1917 to 1929.
