Operation Highjump-In 1946, Admiral Richard E. Byrd led an expedition known as Operation Highjump to explore and map areas unvisited by man on the Antarctic Pole.  This was the sixth expedition Byrd had led to the South Pole since 1928.  Operation Highjump involved a fleet of twelve ships, including a submarine, seaplane tenders and an aircraft carrier.  The flag ship for the operation was the USS Mount Olympus.   He and his crew returned in 1947.  The donor of the collection, Richard A. Johnson of Elmira, NY, served as a radio operator on the USS Mount Olympus during the expedition.   

Scope:The collection contains images and newspaper clippings relating to Operation Highjump. 
Notes:CL 85 shares a box with CL 83 and CL 87.
