Welcome to the Booth Library manuscript index. 

The manuscript index contains links to finding aids for the collections of the Booth Library.  Each finding aid has a description of that collection along with a listing of the items within that collection.  The Booth Library staff and volunteers are updating the index daily in order to make your research experience more productive.

Provenance:The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by Sharon Mashanic in 2008.

Historical:Gilbert Johnson-Gilbert Norman Johnson was born in Morris Run, PA on August 24, 1919.  He moved to Elmira as a child and graduated from Southside High School.  After graduation, he began work as a tool and die maker for Remington Rand Inc and married his wife Edith.  In 1942, he moved briefly to Ilean, NY to work in a munitions plant before moving back to Elmira and enlisting in the Navy in 1944.  From 1944 until his discharge in April 1946, Johnson served as a Machinist Mate 3rd Class at various naval yards including Boston, Philadelphia and San Diego.  After the war, he returned to Elmira, his family and his job at Remington Rand. 
Scope:The Gilbert Johnson Collection dates primarily from the 1940's and contains photographs, postcards, assorted pamphlets and papers, and Gilbert Johnson's diary from 1944. 
Notes:The Gilbert Johnson Collection shares a box with CL 74.
